Setup on Mac

Get your microphone and keyboard ready for speaking and typing activities in just a few minutes.

In this guide:

Before you start

macOS 12 or later

Use the latest version of macOS for the best experi­ence.

Recom­mended Browser

Safari (recom­mended), Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge

Head­phones Recom­mended

Using head­phones reduces back­ground noise and improves speech recog­nition.

 


1. Allow microphone access

macOS will ask for permission the first time ImmerseMe uses your microphone.

  • Click Allow to continue.
If permission is blocked:

Open System Settings and make sure microphone access is enabled.

Apple menu   → System Settings →
Privacy & Security → Microphone

  • Microphone access is On
  • ImmerseMe is toggled On

2. Check browser permissions

Make sure your browser is allowed to use your microphone.

  • Go to Safari → Settings for this website → Microphone.
  • Set to Allow.
  • Reload the page.

  • Click the    icon beside the website address.
  • Set Microphone to Allow.
  • Reload the page.

  • Click the    icon beside the website address.
  • Set Microphone permissions to Allow.
  • Refresh the page.

3. Select the correct microphone

If your Mac has multiple microphones (built-in, USB headset, Bluetooth headset, webcam), make sure you're using the correct one.

Apple menu   → System Settings → Sound

Under Input, choose the microphone you want to use.
Speak normally. The input level should move while you're talking.

4. Test your microphone

Before starting a lesson, test your microphone.

  Mac Test
  • Go to System Settings → Sound.
  • Select your microphone.
  • Speak and make sure the input level moves.

  • Return to ImmerseMe.
  • Start a speaking activity and speak normally.
  • If the microphone icon responds, you're ready to go.

5. Set up your keyboard

Some activities require you to type words using the correct language keyboard.

  Adding a keyboard
  1. Open Apple menu   → System Settings → General → Keyboard → Input Sources.
  2. Click the ➕ buton, choose your language and keyboard, then click Add.
