Setup on Windows

Get your microphone and keyboard ready for speaking and typing activities in just a few minutes.

In this guide:

  1. Allow microphone access
  2. Check browser permissions
  3. Select correct microphone
  4. Test your microphone
  5. Set up your keyboard

 

Before you start

Windows 10 or 11

Use the latest version of Windows.

Recommended Browser

Google Chrome (recommended), Microsoft Edge, or Firefox

Headphones Recommended

Using headphones reduces background noise and improves speech recognition.

 


1. Allow microphone access

The first time you use speaking activities, Windows or your browser will ask for permission to use your microphone.

  • Click Allow.
  • If you accidentally clicked Block, don't worry, you can change it later.
If Windows has blocked microphone access

Open Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone and make sure:

  • Microphone access is On
  • Let desktop apps access your microphone is On

2. Check browser permissions

Make sure your browser is allowed to use your microphone.

  • Click the    icon beside the website address.
  • Set Microphone to Allow.
  • Reload the page.

  • Click the    icon.
  • Set Microphone to Allow.
  • Refresh the page.

  • Click the    icon in the address bar.
  • Allow microphone access.

3. Select the correct microphone

If your computer has multiple microphones (laptop, USB headset, Bluetooth headset, webcam), make sure Windows is using the correct one.

Settings → System → Sound

Under Input, choose the microphone you want to use.
Speak normally. The input level should move while you're talking.

4. Test your microphone

Before starting a lesson, test your microphone.

  Windows Test
  • Go to Settings → Sound.
  • Select your microphone.
  • Choose Test microphone.
  • You should see the input meter move.

  • Return to ImmerseMe.
  • Start a speaking activity.
  • Speak normally. If the microphone icon responds, you're ready to go.

5. Set up your keyboard

Some activities require you to type words using the correct language keyboard.

  Adding a keyboard
  1. Open Settings → Time & Language → Language & Region.
  2. Choose your language → Language options → Add a keyboard.
