How do I use ImmerseMe?

Instructions

  1. Once logged in to ImmerseMe, select a target language. In our example, we'll try to learn French.

  2.
  3. You would then see different filters along the top. You can also search for a specific lesson in the search field.

    Units

The Units filter allows you to easily scroll through the list of topics available (in alphabetical order). The numbers displayed in brackets, e.g. ABC's & Basics (4), tell you how many lessons we have for that specific unit/topic.

    Levels

The Levels filter lets you display the lessons specific to that level. This is already pre-set upon registration, but you can also change this in your Account Settings by following the instructions here.

In our example, the levels shown are based on the NZ Curriculum. The numbers displayed in brackets at the end of the level, e.g. Levels 1 and 2 (Year 9) (40), tell you how many lessons we have at that level for that specific language.

Note: Some topics may not have any lessons at a particular level, so don't be surprised if they 'disappear' from your view. You can get them back by selecting All.

    Layouts

The Layouts filter will only be available if your teacher has requested a custom layout for your school (could either be a textbook layout or school-specific unit plan). In this example, we can choose to display the units from a French textbook called Tapis Volant 1, 4th Edition.

Selecting Tapis Volant 1, 4th Edition will rearrange the layout of lessons within ImmerseMe to suit that particular textbook's Table of Contents.

Note: Keep in mind, this is ImmerseMe's bespoke interactive lessons simply rearranged to follow the same layout of topics as the book, and not the exact textbook sentences/vocabulary, although we anticipate a high % crossover. Our lessons will often be more comprehensive than a specific textbook example.

  4.
  5. When you're ready to start learning, choose a lesson on the right-hand side. In our example, we'll select Bakery > Buying a loaf of bread.

  6.
  7. You will then be routed to the lesson preview page that consists of the following sections:

    Lesson Script

This section shows you the conversation script in the target language, and a play button ▶︎ to listen to the audio.

Hover on the gear icon to show Script Controls where you can toggle the script into English, switch voice, and adjust the audio speed.

You can also download a PDF copy of the conversation including the English translations, Key Vocabulary and Key Grammar. Click Download Lesson Script or Download Lesson Script (Including Variations) on the lower right.

  9. When you're familiar with the script and ready to get started, click Start Lesson. Navigate through the Game Settings to set up your preferred Game Mode, Extension, and Target Accuracy. Click Play! once your setup is done.

    Game Mode

There are mainly 4 Game Modes in our legacy lessons: Pronunciation, Typing, Spelling, and Translation. We'll delve on each mode into more detail from the links below:
➤  How do I use 'Pronunciation' mode?
➤  How do I use 'Typing' mode'?
➤  How do I use 'Spelling' mode?
➤  How do I use 'Translation' mode?

    Screenshot

Tip: We recommend always starting with Pronunciation and moving down through Typing > Spelling > Translation based on the difficulty of each mode.
Note: In addition to our legacy lessons, we've built our new Sentence Builder lessons (with the
      SB
tag), which have 6 Game Modes: Vocab, Grammar, Pronunciation, Typing, Spelling, and Translation.

    Extension

This setting lets you choose between Regular (normal setting), and Delayed which has a 5-second delay and removal of visual prompt. The Delayed extension allows you to train your working memory, thus increasing long term retention. For more information on this, please read the article: How do I use the 'Delayed' working memory training extension?

    Screenshot

Tip: ImmerseMe is all about having fun learning languages! So each completed response earns you a point. And if you choose the Delayed mode, did you know that you'd get double points? How cool is that!

    Target Accuracy

Select your target accuracy from Easy, Medium, and Fluent. If you choose Easy, you would need to have at least 50% of your response pronounced correctly in order to move on to the next prompt. Same way for Medium which requires each of your responses to be at least 75% of accurate, and Fluent which is set at 100% accuracy.

    Screenshot

Tip: If you're a beginner in the language you're learning, we suggest that you choose either Easy or Medium first as a practice. Then when you're ready, you can re-take the lesson and choose Fluent.
  10.
  11. Awesome work learning your first ImmerseMe lesson!👏🏻 Once you've completed a lesson, you would be routed back to the lesson preview page where you'd see your progress and the responses you've completed.

    Lesson Progress

This section shows the percentage of completed responses for each lesson mode. In the example below, the Pronunciation lesson is 80% complete with 4 out of 5 responses done. To know which response was missed, go to the Lesson Script, look for the entry with a faint green check mark , then click the + sign to expand. You can then give it another go to get 100% completion this time.

  13. To move on to another Game Mode for the same lesson, click Start Lesson and then follow the same steps mentioned above. Or if you want to learn a different lesson, click Next at the top or Back to go back to the list of lessons.
